What’s in My Beauty Cabinet?

My beauty cabinet is probably smaller than you would expect from the founder of a skincare brand.

There are no crowded shelves. No complicated sequence of bottles waiting to be layered. No collection of products purchased because someone convinced me that beautiful skin requires one more step.

There are four products.

A gentle Cetaphil cleanser.
Prescription tretinoin.
Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection® Face Shield Bronze SPF 50.
And NFE Face Elixir.

That is the foundation of my daily routine.

Not because I believe these four products are the answer for every woman. They are not. They reflect my skin, my concerns, my experience, and the choices I have made over time.

But they also reflect something I believe deeply:

A product should earn its place in your beauty cabinet.

Experience changes the way you choose

There was a time when more felt like more.

More products. More steps. More promises. More opportunities to correct whatever we had been told was wrong with our skin.

Experience has changed my relationship with beauty.

I am less interested in collecting products and more interested in understanding what each one contributes. I no longer want a routine built around anxiety, excess, or the pursuit of an impossible version of perfection.

I want products that serve my skin with intention.

I want to cleanse without making cleansing a production. I want to support the natural renewal of my skin under professional guidance. I want to protect it every day. And I want to nourish it with a formula created for the realities of mature, melanated skin.

My routine is not elaborate.

It is considered.

I cleanse

I have used a gentle Cetaphil cleanser for years.

It is familiar, uncomplicated, and dependable for my skin. It does what I need a cleanser to do without asking to become the center of the routine.

There is something freeing about knowing that every step does not have to be novel or luxurious. Some products earn their place simply because they work consistently and quietly.

Cleansing prepares my skin.

It is the beginning, not the destination.

I support renewal

Prescription tretinoin is part of my evening routine.

It is a medical product, used under professional guidance, and it has a very different role from the cosmetic skincare products in my cabinet.

I do not consider tretinoin a universal recommendation. It will not be appropriate for every person, and no one should begin using a prescription product because it appears in someone else’s beauty cabinet.

Its presence in mine represents something important about the NFE philosophy: luxury skincare does not need to compete with responsible medical care.

The two should not be confused.

I believe in science. I believe in professional expertise. I also believe that the daily experience of caring for the skin, its hydration, nourishment, comfort, resilience, and visible vitality, deserves just as much intention.

I protect

Every morning, I wear sunscreen.

The one currently in my cabinet is Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection® Face Shield Bronze SPF 50. I chose it because daily protection matters to me, and I appreciate how the bronze tint works with my complexion.

It is my chosen sunscreen, not the only sunscreen worth using.

The larger point is that protection is not negotiable in my routine.

I cannot speak about caring for uneven tone, visible discoloration, melasma, or mature skin while treating sunscreen as an afterthought. Protecting the skin is not the glamorous part of the conversation, but it is one of the most responsible.

The products in my cabinet do not all perform the same role.

They should not.

A thoughtful routine is not a collection of competing promises. It is a system in which each product has a clear purpose.

I nourish

And then there is NFE Face Elixir.

This is the product I created because the nourishing step in my routine was not doing enough.

My skin was changing. It felt drier and tighter. Melasma, uneven tone, visible texture, and the changes that come with age required more thoughtful attention. When I speak about the canvas, I am not talking about flawless skin.

I am not interested in language that tells mature women our faces must become poreless, lineless, textureless, or untouched by the lives we have lived.

The canvas is the skin beneath everything else.

It is the skin beneath foundation, concealer, bronzer, and blush. It is also the skin that remains when we decide to wear none of those things.

Some days, I enjoy makeup. I appreciate the artistry, refinement, and transformation it can offer. Other days, I want to see my own face without adding anything more.

The principle is not that everyone should copy my cabinet.

The principle is that every product should have a reason for being there.

Fewer, better products does not mean depriving the skin. It means rejecting excess that does not serve it.

It means asking better questions.

What is this product supposed to do?
Does my skin actually need it?
Is it helping me care for my skin, or simply feeding my fear that I am not doing enough?
Would I notice if I stopped using it?
Has it earned its place?

Those questions require discernment. They also require confidence.

Beauty culture often teaches women to respond to aging by adding more: more correction, more intervention, more urgency, more products promising to restore what time has supposedly taken away.

I do not believe mature skin should be approached with panic.

I believe it should be approached with experience.

Working with what I have

One of the ideas I have embraced is that beauty is not only about working with what we have. It is about celebrating it, embracing it, and taking care of it.

That understanding comes with experience.

I am not trying to return to the skin I had at 25. I am caring for the skin I have now, the skin that has lived, changed, adapted, and carried me through every version of myself.
